How many of you know when your tires are underinflated? It's not a knock, but based on the pressure levels we've seen in our Nissan service department when people come in for routine oil changes and such, we're guessing not many. To be honest, if we didn't deal with cars every day, we probably wouldn't either. That doesn't, however, make proper tire pressure any less important.

In fact, a recent federal study offers evidence that underinflated tires triple drivers' risk of an accident. Thankfully, Nissan has just introduced a clever system specially designed to make maintaining optimum tire pressure levels easy: Easy Fill Tire Alert.

How does the system work?

…Essentially, it's composed of a blend of auditory and visually warnings. When the system reads a tire has below-ideal pressure levels, the tire in question as well as its respective air pressure measurement will appear on the car's display. The driver should take this cue, stop at the next gas station and grab the air hose.

Blinking four-ways tell owners the air is actually going into the tire. And, when the tire reaches its optimal pressure level, the horn will chirp. Should you fill a tire beyond optimal levels the flashers will start blinking faster and the horn will beep three times. To return the tire to optimal levels, all you have to do is release air until the horn once again emits an audible chirp.

Vishnu Jayamohan, a member of the Nissan Product Planning and Advanced Strategy team further explains the benefit the system promises drivers: "If you get a low pressure tire warning, you're not left wondering if you have a serious condition that requires you to stop immediately, or if it's something that allows you to drive home or to the nearest filling station and then fill up."1

When will the new Nissan Easy Fill Tire Alert system be available?

Well, after first debuting in the 2013 Nissan Altima - all new 2013 models. That's right; Nissan is making this innovative system standard across their entire lineup.
